“So, let me tell you about the place I’m from, about ‘Mamasita’s Orphanage’. Also known as the den of misfits around here. It’s this, inconspicuous children’s home situated in the middle of the city of Tivoli, which shiftingly accommodates around a dozen kids, young or old. I mean, I guess I would be considered in the older portion of the kids, considering I’m the eldest at seventeen. Currently we’re… four-teeeen? Yep, fourteen kids including me.
“Now, to talk a bit about what kind of place it actually is, behind its caring, sunny, ‘never-a-cloud-above’ facade, we have to talk about
Madam. I mean, she treats us well, don’t get me wrong. But that’s because behind the orphanage front, she’s hiding a money printing machine, with us as the cogs. But we’ll get to that in a second. None of us actually knows her name. I turn eighteen in a couple of months, and believe me, I’ve tried to figure it out. I started out, simply asking her. That, obviously, yielded no results. But even though time passed and I got older and more skilled at collecting information for… reasons, I simply couldn’t find anything that would give me just a tad of information as to what her real name was. I mean, she got no letters. Or, well, she did, but none of them were labeled. They were all in sealed envelopes, using the most basic paper, the most basic adhesive one could find, written by people who wrote like twelve year olds. I mean, for god's sake, it wasn’t even as if she got it with a certain schedule. It would just suddenly be like, “Would you be a peach and fetch me a letter? You know where.” and send us off with a “Remember to say it’s for Madaaaam.” It’s so frustrating!
“Sorry, I got off on a tangent. Well. I don’t wanna say Madam is the woman who taught me everything I know, because I want to leave some of that credit for myself. However, she taught me everything I
needed to know to help her ‘backroom-run establishment’ by bringing her gifts. Everything I know about lockpicking, sleight of hand, how to stay calm in precarious situations, acting and so on, she taught me. She always told me “There are two ways to go about this type of work. Either you meticulous plan for every scenario, or… you just wing it and see what happens,” only to tell me that “smart people plan to succeed. However,
street smart people plan to be caught and act accordingly.” Her suggestion was a good mixture. And then she said something I’ll never forget, “Be like water, plans change, they never go as you’d expect them to, so you gotta be able to adapt. Fill the gaps of your siblings when they inevitably screw the pooch. Be the quick fix.” Well… The “Be like water, plans change” part was the important stuff, I guess.
“Now, I say ‘bring her gifts’, but that’s just what we tell the youngest so it’s easier to justify for the youngest. In reality what we do is just stealing and letting her whitewash the product so we can have food on the table. It’s like a give and take relationship. We bring her an income beyond what she’d receive from the palace, and she gives us stability, a place to stay, with a roof above our heads and food in our stomachs.
And, a family. Though we are all different, well, except the triplets- But we’re a family. We have each other, through thick and thin. This bundle of misfits is probably the best family I could have asked for. I’ve more or less become responsible for the youngsters. I’ve given them all the tips and tricks I’ve learned through trial and error. Lucky bastards *

“Oh, the kids? Yeah sure, I can tell you about them, like briefly. Well, going from oldest to youngest it starts with me, then Kenny, then- Oh! I should probably tell you how they got their names. Well, to be honest, Madam ‘names’ us when she picks us up. Take Izar and Kin, they’re referred to as Yin and Yang. Because they’re complete opposites. She refuses to properly name us, because “then I’ll grow attached to you rascals,” so she just nicknames us. We give each other names though, which she is understanding of. So… I named Kenny, and we named me together. Well, it was mostly me being like “I feel like a Liliana” and him nodding and smiling. Since then, it’s become more and more of this group thing. New people get their names on their one year’s day. So their name fits them, you know. Every name has a meaning to it.
“Well, to go through them all, for starters there’s me at seventeen years, ten months and 8 days. My name is Liliana, which comes from ‘Lily’ which is this beautiful flower representing purity, which I obviously am… Pure and beautiful.
Then there’s Kenny, who’s fifteen years and four months. His name comes from ‘Kenneth’ which means fiery. That’s because of a red birthmark that’s got this funny pattern that almost looks like an explosion. Same reason that Madam called him ‘Mark’.
Following him is Cimon, or ‘Chub’ who’ll be fifteen soon! He had these really chubby cheeks when he was young, hence the nickname, but honestly he’s probably the one that sleeps the most of all of us. So we called him Cimon, which means sleepy. He’s the one who’ll always bring up the mood, or stir up a situation that’ll make the whole room laugh. I remember him teasing Tyga about his crush on Izar once, and Tyga just… Have you ever seen someone’s head literally explode from embarrassment? Yeah, like that. Well, not literally, but, you know! But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Hmm. Who is it that’s next, again? Oh right! Funnily enough, Tyga’s the next one at fourteen years and two months, so maybe actually I’m not that ahead of myself after all. He’s, I think, the only one who kept the name Madam gave him. I don’t know, he liked it and said he wanted to keep his name. To be fair, it fits him well. He’s a tiger faunri. What he’s like? Well, he tries to be scary and fierce and such… But he’s just so cute, it’s not possible for him.
Then there’s Kir, who’s thirteen and a month, in a couple of days. Our little angel. He’s often found clinging to Izar, our little devil. She’s about twelve and a half. Izar is the Yin to Kir’s Yang, which funnily enough is one of the times where Madam was spot on with her nicknames. She’s a little troublemaker. ‘You ever seen the type of person that likes to be outside and play and do stuff, drag around someone who’d clearly rather be somewhere else. Well, that’s the two of them in a nutshell. The funny thing about Izar, is that was not what we had thought for her at first. Both Kir and Izar mean light, but Izar was originally meant to be called Ciarra, which means ‘Dark’. But she associated it with evil, throwing a bit of a tantrum stating that she was not evil, with tears in her eyes. We all looked at each other, because we of course didn’t mean anything bad about it, and didn’t want to upset her, but we also didn’t really have another name at the ready. Unexpectedly, Kir was the one who stepped in, and named her Izar, because that meant light too. The two of them have been stuck together ever since.
Kai’s almost twelve and probably the smartest of the bunch. If we refer to Madam’s “Have a plan, but be prepared” he’s solely the first part. He’s meticulous, smart… but he stumbles when the plan doesn’t go the way he planned it out. He’s also a bit of a loner. We gave him his name, which means ‘sea’ because he’s, like Kenny, got this weird birthmark. And he spends as much time by water as possible. ‘Helps him calm down, and think he says.
Aaaand we’ve arrived at the triplets, Nakoa, Tanya and Bader. They’re all a little more than eleven, but Nakoa is older by about twelve hours, then Tanya and Bader are like six minutes apart or something like that. Those guys are like peas in a pot, though they couldn’t be more different from each other personality wise. Nakoa is like this goofy, inclusive big brother. That’s also why he got the name. It means ‘protector’. Tanya’s a perfectionist, which sometimes leads her to be the little bully of our little clique. Nothing too harsh, but if there’s something to point out, she does. And Bader has this ‘follower’ mentality. He follows Tanya around a lot and does this monkey see, monkey do thing, which leads him to become like this passive bully. Their names also reflect this. Tanya means ‘sun’ and Bader means 'moon’. Like the moon only shines the light of the sun type of deal. Good kids all in all, love them to bits.
So. Down to the last four. Three of them are ten years and then we’ve got a straggler. Junpei is the oldest of the three. He’s the sweetest and most innocent and pure little boy. There’s not a bad bone in his body! Which in itself is a fantastic thing, but in our business, it’s quite counterintuitive. There’s a long way to go in training for him. He’s also the one who takes care of the outsiders. The link between everybody. Just a happy little goofball. Also the one closest to madam, well excluding Rowan, but I’ll get to that.
Then we’ve got two newcomers. Or well, Eden’s been here for a year and a day, and ‘Bubble’ is getting his name tomorrow. Don’t tell him, but we’re gonna name him Iké. He’s this bundle of energy. Can never sit still. I swear I’ve tried to run him tired, but no matter what I do I seem to fall asleep before he does. Eden’s still a little shy, but she’s absolutely delightful, hence the name. She gives a helping hand, wherever it’s needed, but doesn't talk a lot.
And lastly, the straggler. Rowan. He keeps a little to himself, because some of the other kids were after him when he was young, because he’s Madam’s boy. Well, you know, younger than he is now. He turned six a couple of days ago. Sure there’s some he talks to. Kai most, and Junpei a bit. And me of course, but everyone talks to me, I’m basically the one in charge. Madam cuddles him a bit. She says he’s still too young to go with us on jobs, so he stays home and helps her with chores around the house.
“That’s the kids. Brief, right? What else do you want to know? Who’s been here the longest? Me. Obviously. But other than that… I mean, let’s take it in order. It’s me, Kenny, Cimon, Tyga, Kir, Izar, The Triplets, Junpei, Kai, Rowan, Eden and ‘Bubble’. I’ve been here all my life. Kenny’s been here for thirteen years. Together with Cimon and Tyga, who were more or less here at the same time. Kir and Izar’s been here for about twelve years. The triplets have been here their entire lives too. The same with Junpei. Kai’s been here for about 7 years. Rowan has obviously been here for his entire life. It would be kinda hypocritical if she were to give off her kids, when she, herself, has got multiple of other people’s children under her roof, wouldn’t it? And lastly the two newcomers, who came about a year ago.
“Look, I’d
