- Appearance -William looked like a pretty average high school student, both in-game and in real life. Both would have the height slider placed slightly above average, and the weight slider slightly below. He has short, sandy hair, generally not much more styled than it was when he came out of bed. He's generally seen wearing brown jeans and a neutral-coloured sweater, a compromise between the formality but impracticality of neat clothes and the comfort of oversized hoodies. He also generally wears glasses, despite not needing them all that much.
Generally walking slow and relaxed, it's still obvious to anyone attentive enough that Will has a slight limp. He had been in a car incident some years ago, and his right leg has never fully recovered.
While his character is clearly based on his real self, there's also a whole lot of differences between them. His hair in-game, for a start, is not nearly as short as that on his real self. Here, his hair almost comes down to his neck, and could easily be tied up into a ponytail instead of just a messy bunch of hair. This meant that ever since the Apocalypse, he's been wearing ponytails more and more to avoid getting hair in his face.
An obvious difference is of course his race in the game. His wolf ears and tail clearly indicate him as a Faunri, and anyone who pays enough attention might even notice his slightly larger canines. And being an avid roleplayer, he is generally only seen wearing his ranger clothing when actually putting his ranger skills to use. Whenever he's just roaming around, chances are he will be wearing rather similar garments as the People of the Land.
You could say that his character is supposed to be a representation of an older version of himself, adjusted to fit in the world. Where the body is based on him, anything else is simply part of the world he's living in.
- Personality -As much of an introvert he is in real life, it never truly shows in the new world. Here, while still not the most talkative person in the room, he'll still be seen "outside" regularly. Why? Either because he feels safe on the other side of a screen (even if there no longer
is a screen), because he's with people who enjoy the same things as him, or perhaps more likely, both.
If he ever makes a spontaneous decision, it's only in the toughest of situations. In his eyes, observing a problem before solving it generally causes the best solutions. That is, if there is time to observe the problem, and clear reason behind it. As much as he believes himself to carefully weigh his pros and cons, as soon as he has a feeling to do one thing he won't switch his mind that easily. Especially once other people are involved, chances are he won't be taking any rational decisions regarding saving them; he'd just do it.
On the topic of him having a different self-view of himself, we reach the point of how honest he is. If he doesn't have a reason to tell the whole truth, well, don't expect the whole truth. And this is where he gets rather hypocritical. While he does not mind lying a small amount himself, he expects everyone to speak the truth. This even extends to him trusting them to tell the truth, for better or worse.
Even if he might lie from time to time, William still tries to do the right thing. For him, this means protecting those who need protecting. While you won't see him coming up for a random mugging-victim on the street, there is a reasonable chance this victim will receive a party invite so he actually has a reason to protect them. After all, strangers have nothing to do with him, but if you're a member of his party, clan, family, friends or in any other way associated with him, he has your back. But once these people turn on each other, he has no clue on who is more important to him...
Yet even still, a big part of Will's life is the protecting of others. Why he chose a ranger instead of a paladin or another tank, something better to protect people? Sometimes he doubts this himself, but it always turns out that in his eyes, a protector should protect without bothering others, such as needing a heal. This might put him at danger sometimes, insisting that he does not need help when he obviously does. Maybe that's why he can be seen at the cathedral so often...
- Biography -When Will was just a wee lad, he was already full of imagination. Most kids are, but some of them carry their imagination with them longer than others. These people are called... Imaginators! - No wait, this is not the opening of some anime!
Sorry about that. Let me get back on track. As I said, William was a boy full of imagination. If he could, he would have lived hundreds of lives in hundreds of different scenarios. He quickly found out that no matter how hard he tried, he could simply not be the all-powerful hero, the highschool sweetheart, the wise old mentor, the strategic mastermind and the cool sidecharacter all at once. So instead of becoming them, he started reading books so he could imagine these awesome concepts. And watching movies, so he could see them come to life. And, of course, playing games, so he could actually
be them after all. But before we start talking about how he ended up in this new world, let's look at the rest of his life real quick...
William generally had a good relation with his parents. Having two sisters also never bothered him, and walking them to school was not a problem at all. But while his relations with his family were all-round good, he simply was not able to make friends as easily. Maybe it was just his shyness, or his innocence, or his imagination, but most kids simply did not hang out with him all that much.
As most kids, William ended up in school. As much as he studied, he was never truly a top student, but then again, neither was he at the lowest of the low. Staying around the 70% mark was more than enough for him, and meant that he could easily progress through school without letting it consume his entire life.
Mentioned before was William having gotten into a traffic incident at some point. Nothing major, but it still changed his life ever so slightly. Getting hit by a car is simply no pleasant experience. And having to spend the rest of your life no longer being able to walk far distances does not sound like big of a problem, but it still stops you from enjoying your walk in the park. And thus, he spent more and more time stowed away in his bedroom, reading books and watching anime.
As much as he wanted to, William never quite found the right game for him. He could be seen switching from MMO to sandbox game to puzzle game to battle simulator within a week, and the next week he somehow tried out a new one in each genre. He still wanted to play one MMO at some point, but one was too grindy, the other too story-focused, the other not social enough, and so he kept switching free trials from one to the other. One month, he decided to try the older game Gaia Reborn. Even though it was subscription-based, he read some good reviews online and well, there was a new expansion and it had a good deal for multiple expansions, and apparently an active community, plus a new server had just been released, so :insert shrug here:. Having already planned a character, backstory and a whole plan to go roleplay with other players, he decided to finally jump into the game, and then... there he was.
This game was a
lot more immersive than he expected.
- Extra -- Character Backstory -
Like any roleplayer, William had a whole backstory behind his character Gwyddion. It would, of course, be a waste not to incorporate it here, even if it will totally go unused, but expect him to try to play by his character.
Gwyddion Keithson was born and raised on a farm not far from a small village. He had a happy little family, with both parents being simple Landers and a little sister who oftentimes would get in trouble. Being the protector he is, Gwyddion would always keep his little sister safe from whoever might get a bit too close to her, despite him being no more than a little squirt himself.
With the farm on the border between village and forest, it might not be surprising to hear Gwyddion visited the woods oftentimes. One day, a large party of travellers came through here, and Gwyddion went to investigate (hoping not to be spotted himself). There, he spotted a gang of goblins approaching the village. Not knowing what to do and frozen from shock, the only reason Gwyddion is still alive to this day is because of the help of a ranger who had been tracking the malignity for several hours, and noticed Gwyddion's half-baked attempt at spying on them. This Whitley (whether it was his first or last name, Gwyddion never truly learned) notified the villagers of the incoming danger, and together they fought it off.
In the years after, our young boy was trained by our new, grizzly ranger Whitley, and perhaps to no surprise, led onto the path of the adventurer. Though it was hard for Gwyddion to leave his family behind, he knew he had to do whatever he could to protect them, and end the dangers in the world.
- Other Notes -
Most of his character, William quickly thought up. Race, class, all were pretty easy choices. Until he reached the crafting talent section. The concept of making items seemed pretty cool to him, but what kind of items would he want to specialise in? Something that would fit a not-too-tough Faunri ranger, so blacksmith and mechanic were quickly crossed off. Artisan, pharmacist and scribe both sounded like something too intellectual and boring. So that left him with carpenter, chef or tailor. Chef, as much fun as it would be to sell food and drinks in a game, just did not sound like the character he had planned. So carpenter or tailor it was, and for now he might as well go with tailor. Maybe one day, he would get a talent change.
The wide choice of roleplay talents made that a lot easier, but even so, he still had to make a hard choice between courier and merchant. Both would be cool to travel the world, but in the end, the idea of a character travelling the world to deliver things took his preference over one travelling to sell.
